Our bodies and their various functions are truly extraordinary; this blessing deserves to be maintained. Illness and the length of our lives are indeed within Allah’s decree. However, we are still commanded to make an effort. Practicing healthy and fit life tips is a form of gratitude and care for our bodies.

I dedicate this article primarily to my beloved close ones. Its content is based on my old notes—including the books You: The Owner’s Manual by Mehmet C. Oz and Michael F. Roizen, and Health Is Cheap by Dr. Handrawan Nadesul—then aligned with more up-to-date health guidelines. The hope is simple: with Allah’s permission, better habits help us maintain our quality of life and reduce the risk of disease.

Not all advice is suitable for everyone. Age, medical conditions, pregnancy, medications, and activity levels can change our needs. Therefore, use this list as a general guide, not a substitute for medical examination or advice.

Here are 18 tips for a healthy and fit body and mind that we can implement little by little.

Don’t Eat Until You’re Hungry and Stop Before You’re Full

Don’t overeat

The message to stop before getting too full remains relevant. What we’re looking for isn’t extreme hunger suppression, but rather learning to recognize our body’s signals: eating when truly hungry, enjoying food slowly, and then stopping when satisfied. This approach helps us become more mindful of portion sizes.

Everyone’s energy needs differ according to age, gender, body size, activity, and health conditions. Therefore, general calorie numbers should not be treated as the same target for everyone. Overly strict calorie restriction also doesn’t automatically lead to a longer life and can be risky if done without supervision.

Practice can start with using smaller plates, reducing eating while looking at screens, and allowing time before taking a second helping. If you often experience excessive hunger, dizziness, or drastic weight changes, talk to a healthcare professional.

Control Weight and Waist Circumference

Weight is not the only measure of health, but it is still useful when read alongside waist circumference, blood pressure, fitness, and other examination results. Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by the square of height in meters. This number is a screening tool, not a diagnosis.

Waist circumference provides additional insight into fat around the abdomen. Risk thresholds can vary by population and individual conditions, so don’t judge yourself based on a single number. If the results are concerning, consult a doctor or nutritionist. For a more structured approach, my notes on how to gradually lose weight can be further reading.

Maintain Blood Vessel Health

Maintain blood vessel health

The term “cleaning blood vessels” should be understood metaphorically, not as a process of sweeping away plaque with a single food or supplement. We maintain blood vessels by controlling risk factors: not smoking, being physically active, managing blood pressure, choosing better fats, and checking cholesterol and blood sugar as needed.

Choose sources of unsaturated fats such as fish, nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils in moderation. Limit trans fats and avoid excessive consumption of saturated fats. If your doctor prescribes medication for blood pressure, diabetes, or cholesterol, a healthy lifestyle complements that treatment—it doesn’t replace it.

Increase Fiber, Fruits, and Vegetables

Vary the colors of fruits and vegetables daily

Fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains provide fiber, vitamins, minerals, and various compounds the body needs. Fiber also helps with satiety and digestive health. WHO recommends a diet rich in whole plant-based foods and, for people over 10 years old, at least about 400 grams of fruits and vegetables per day.

That number doesn’t have to make us bother weighing every bite. A simpler way is to fill most of your plate with vegetables, add whole fruits as snacks, and choose a variety of types. Juice doesn’t fully replace whole fruit because its fiber content can be reduced and sugar is consumed more quickly.

Drink Enough Water

Drink water according to your body’s needs

Water plays a role in temperature regulation, digestion, circulation, and various bodily functions. However, fluid needs are not the same for everyone. Hot weather, exercise, fever, pregnancy, and breastfeeding can increase needs; certain heart or kidney diseases may even require restrictions from a doctor.

Make water your primary beverage. Thirst and overly dark urine color can be practical reminders, though not diagnostic tools. There’s no need to force yourself to drink excessive amounts, as too much water in a short time can also be harmful.

Limit Excessive Sugar and Salt

Sugar and salt should be limited, not consumed excessively

Added sugar easily enters through sugary drinks, cakes, sauces, and packaged foods. Salt is also often “hidden” in instant noodles, processed foods, snacks, soy sauce, and ready-to-use seasonings. Reading nutrition labels helps us see the actual amounts of sugar and sodium.

According to WHO healthy diet guidelines, free sugars should be less than 10 percent of daily energy, while sodium is limited to less than 2 grams per day—equivalent to less than 5 grams of salt. These are general targets, not reasons to eliminate all flavor. Reduce gradually so your palate can adapt.

Choose More Whole Carbohydrates

The glycemic index describes how quickly carbohydrate-rich foods raise blood sugar, but its value is not the sole determinant of health. Portion size, cooking method, ripeness, and combination with fiber, protein, and fat also play a role.

Rather than solely chasing glycemic index numbers, it’s more practical to choose minimally processed carbohydrate sources: brown or mixed rice, oats, corn, sweet potatoes, potatoes in reasonable portions, and legumes. People with diabetes need to adjust their meal amounts and schedules with a healthcare professional.

Eat More Fish

Fish is a source of protein and unsaturated fats

Fish is a source of protein, vitamins, minerals, and—in certain types—omega-3 fatty acids. We don’t always have to buy salmon. Local fish like mackerel, sardines, skipjack tuna, milkfish, and freshwater fish can be nutritious and more affordable options.

Preparation methods are also important. Steaming, wrapping in banana leaves (pepes), baking, or stir-frying with a little oil are better habits than constantly deep-frying. Vary the types of fish and pay attention to local recommendations for pregnant women or vulnerable groups regarding fish with high mercury content.

Choose Natural Foods Over Processed Foods

The longer the processing, often the easier it is for added sugar, salt, and fat to enter. Therefore, build your menu from ingredients whose forms are still easily recognizable: vegetables, fruits, eggs, fish, lean meat, tofu, tempeh, beans, and whole grains.

However, “processed” doesn’t always mean bad. Pasteurized milk, tempeh, tofu, frozen fish, and frozen vegetables also undergo processing. What needs to be limited more are ultra-processed products that are high in sugar, sodium, or unhealthy fats and low in fiber. If you want inspiration for ingredients, also see 10 nutritious ingredients that are easy to keep at home—without considering any single food a magic cure.

Vary Your Food

No single food provides all nutrients. Variety helps us get a combination of protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Try changing your sources of protein, vegetables, and fruits throughout the week, instead of eating the exact same menu every day.

The principle of color can be a simple guide: green from leafy vegetables, red from tomatoes or watermelon, orange from carrots or papaya, purple from eggplant, and white from cauliflower or onions. Choose local and seasonal ingredients to make this habit realistic for the family budget.

Don’t Smoke

Say “no” to cigarettes

There is no safe level of tobacco exposure. WHO explains that tobacco damages almost every organ in the body and increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, lung disease, and various cancers. Secondhand smoke is also dangerous.

For those who don’t smoke yet, don’t start. For those who already do, quitting is still beneficial at any age. Nicotine dependence is not merely a lack of willpower; appropriate counseling and therapy support can increase the chances of success. Ask your doctor or a smoking cessation service for help and protect your home from smoke.

Exercise Sufficiently and Regularly

Exercise doesn’t always have to be intense workouts at the gym. Brisk walking, cycling, swimming, gardening, and taking the stairs are also physical activities. The most important thing is to move regularly and reduce prolonged sitting.

WHO recommends adults get 150–300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week, or 75–150 minutes of vigorous activity, plus muscle-strengthening exercises at least two days per week. Start with your current ability. People with chronic diseases, chest pain, or those who have been inactive for a long time should consult a doctor before increasing intensity.

Read also:

Strength Training After Age 30: 10 Major Benefits

Benefits of Walking After a Meal

Get Enough Sleep

Adequate sleep helps the body and mind recover

Sleep is for recovery, not a luxury. Many adults need about seven to nine hours per night, although individual needs may vary. Quality is also important: long but frequently interrupted sleep may not be restorative.

Try to maintain a consistent sleep and wake schedule, reduce caffeine before bed, dim the lights, and keep screens away from the bedroom. Loud snoring, sleep apnea, severe daytime sleepiness, or prolonged insomnia should be checked by a doctor.

Get Regular Health Check-ups

Regular check-ups help identify risk factors before they cause symptoms. However, the type and frequency are not the same for everyone. Age, gender, family history, habits, previous examination results, and existing diseases need to be considered.

Blood pressure, blood sugar, lipid profile, dental health, immunization status, and certain cancer screenings can be discussed with your doctor. Avoid undergoing extensive screening packages without indication, as false positive results can cause anxiety and unnecessary interventions. A good examination is targeted and followed by appropriate action.

Manage Stress

Stress is a part of life. In the short term, the stress response helps us face challenges. Problems arise when pressure is prolonged, feels uncontrollable, and begins to interfere with sleep, relationships, work, or health.

Recognize what we can change and what we need to accept. Physical activity, rest, worship, breathing exercises, writing, and talking to a trusted person can help. If anxiety or sadness persists, self-harm urges appear, or daily activities are disrupted, seeking professional help is a brave step—not a sign of weakness.

Build Harmonious Relationships with Your Spouse and Family

Warm family relationships provide a source of support

Healthy family relationships provide a sense of security, a place to share, and support when life is tough. Harmony doesn’t mean an absence of differences. It grows from honest communication, respect, shared responsibilities, and a willingness to correct mistakes.

For married couples, emotional intimacy and mutually agreed-upon biological relationships can be part of well-being. However, don’t turn relationships into a uniform health prescription. If there is violence, pressure, or an unsafe relationship, safety must be prioritized, and professional help should be sought.

Maintain Kinship Ties, Friendships, and Social Connections

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever wishes to have his provision expanded and his lifespan extended, let him maintain kinship ties.” (HR Bukhari).

Maintaining kinship ties also provides emotional support and a sense of belonging. Contact extended family, chat with neighbors, attend religious gatherings, join sports or volunteer activities, and nurture old friendships. Meaningful relationships are more important than the number of contacts.

Technology can help us stay connected, but don’t let all relationships stop at the screen. Set aside time for real-life meetings when possible. Warmth, active listening, and mutual help are hard to replace with likes or followers.

Increase Faith and Piety

Faith in Allah provides direction, hope, and tranquility in facing life. Worship, prayer, remembrance (dhikr), fasting, charity, and community togetherness can help some people find meaning and support. These benefits should be appreciated without making religion a guaranteed promise of freedom from illness.

We also need to be careful about claims that faith or certain rituals can cure cancer and serious diseases on their own. Spiritual effort can go hand in hand with medical examinations and treatment. The two do not have to be in opposition.

“Indeed, only with the remembrance of Allah do hearts find comfort.” (QS Ar-Ra’d: 28)

How to Start Healthy Habits

These eighteen points will feel overwhelming if done all at once. Choose one habit that is most feasible to implement this week: walk 20 minutes, add one serving of vegetables, stop daily sugary drinks, or sleep 30 minutes earlier. Once it becomes stable, add the next habit.

Consistent small progress is more valuable than big changes that only last three days. For an overview of how communities stay active into old age, you can also read lessons from the Blue Zones. Take reasonable principles, then adapt them to your family’s circumstances and health.

Conclusion

A healthy life is not determined by one food, one supplement, or one routine.
